Settling into university life has been challenging, especially since I moved away from home (and to be honest, my cooking skills could use some work—something my classmates enjoy teasing me about!). Despite the hurdles, it has been a rewarding experience. The university has made the transition smoother and more exciting than I anticipated.
I chose SP Jain over other, perhaps more well-known universities because I wanted to set myself apart as a graduate. Each year, the number of graduates entering the job market increases exponentially, and many of them are competing for the same roles. With the changing landscape of the job market, it's crucial to adapt. Employers are now looking for individuals with refined skills and an adaptable mindset. You can't develop those skills by simply sitting through endless lectures—you need to actively apply them.
SP Jain is designed to equip students with the practical skills required to thrive in the business world. From day one, you're encouraged to build and refine your abilities. The engaging lectures are far from passive: in nearly every session, we're required to present on topics relevant to our modules, collaborate through team-building exercises, and practice public speaking.
Personally, I've already noticed a significant improvement in my communication skills since starting at SP Jain. My lecturers actively encourage me to step out of my comfort zone—something I used to shy away from. For example, I recently helped at one of our open days and even spoke during the Q&A session for prospective students. A year ago, I would have been too nervous to speak and probably would’ve found an excuse to avoid it. Additionally, I ran for student representative to engage more with my classmates and act as a voice for them, which is something I never would have considered before.
The sense of community within my cohort has been something I deeply value. There's been genuine support in fostering a community in the cohort, instead of just singular friendships. The faculty made an effort from the very start, during orientation, to help us bond, not only with each other but also with them.
On that first day, we did a lot of icebreakers, learning fun and random facts about each other. I still remember finding out that one of my classmates practices Muay Thai! Later, a few of us joined an optional treasure hunt, but we ended up ditching it halfway through to grab food and chat for hours. That simple day of laughter and conversation laid the foundation for some real friendships that I know will last. Just last week, we went on a trip to the F1 Exhibition at the Excel Centre, and as an F1 lover, it was a dream come true. I had been wanting to go for so long and experiencing it with friends made it even better.
SP Jain has already given me so much, and I can’t wait for what’s next—especially our upcoming trip to Singapore!
